Tips for Working with Burlap

Image
It has been a few weeks since I posted the first burlap totes in my Etsy shop. Burlap is so "in" right now, and so pretty in just about any decor!! The "teaser" pictures that I shared on our Facebook page got a LOT of comments and interactions, so judging from the response, you gals love burlap, too! But working with burlap is SO WAY different than any medium I have ever used before. My prep time for these totes is about double what it is for a quilted tote. It is fun to see the natural burlap fibers bend in submission to my machine needle and become a beautiful tote. Definitely worth the extra work! I read a bunch of posts about working with burlap before I started, and here are the tips that seem to work for me. To start with, I have used two types of burlap so far: Natural burlap , which is tan in colour and usually has a unique smell. Did you know that burlap in this state is compost-able? You can add your scraps to your compost pile and they will break down o

Four Things You May Not Realize about Link Parties!

Image
Let's talk about link parties today. I've been co-hosting the Weekend Wind-Down party for a couple months now, and I've learned some things as a co-host that I didn't know as a blogger! Lots of bloggers participate in linky parties, on a weekly or even daily basis. There is a lot of work to it - for each party you have to add your links and then link back to the blogger in your post. Depending on the party rules, you may have to follow the blogger on social media or add their button to your site. Lastly, it is good etiquette to visit other links and comment or share their posts. All of this, just for ONE party! I thought this was a lot of work - and it is! - but then I started co-hosting the Weekend Wind-Down party. I realize now just how much work goes into a party from the host's side of things! For instance, did you know.... ...that a week is a very short amount of time? Silly, I know...but the time between weekly parties goes by sooo fast. Seems like just a da

Why Guatemalan Scholarships??

Image
Last week I announced an exciting new step for So Sew Organized ... we are partnering with Team Guatemala to provide scholarships for two hard-working Guatemalan teens. Since I made the announcement, it has been so fun to see some orders trickle in and know that each time a portion of that sale is going towards these scholarships. As I craft each item, I think about how this will benefit Alan and Ruth and am prompted to pray for them . It is such a blessing to know that we can be involved in making a difference in these two young people's lives! You might have questions like, "why these two teens?" "How are they really using my money?" "What kind of school do they attend?" Glad you asked. :) Ruth attends Proximos Pasos , a Christian school for girls. The Vision of Proximos Pasos (Next Steps Girls School) is to offer a Christ-centered educational experience to girls who are denied that opportunity by the public schools in Santa Maria de Jes
