Organizing Challenge! How I organized one small drawer

Image
I'm always amazed at how stuff piles up...junk, really! Please tell me some of you have this problem too?! I try really hard to keep the things I own to a minimum - a kind of minimalistic approach to owning stuff. But still...things pile up so fast! I decided it is time to do a bit of fall cleaning. Cleaning up and cleaning out! This can be intimidating, so I started small. Sometimes the hardest part is just getting started! I cleaned out my bathroom vanity's drawer, which is small and a great place to start. Read on to see what made the cut and what didn't (and my favourite way to store my makeup brushes!) and I have an organizing challenge for YOU! Here is the embarrassing "before" of my bathroom vanity drawer. Overflowing with stuff! I took everything out and cleaned it. I decided to put a pretty piece of wrapping paper on the bottom or the drawer. Not really water resistant, but it will be mostly covered by plastic dividers anyway. An...

Three things I WON'T purge

Image
I am a HUGE fan of purging and organizing. It is such a freeing feeling to get rid of extra stuff that I don't need and make room for the things that make me smile and are functional and practical. I go on big organizing/purging sprees often, usually at about 10 pm. ;) All my best work happens at that time of day! I currently rent a tiny room, and while I could have picked a bigger room I just dearly love this one! It is so bright and sunny and cheerful, and I really don't mind that it is small. That does mean I have to be intentional in keeping it organized and neat so I have room to create and relax. There are, however, some things that I won't get rid of, even in my tiny room: 1. Bedside tray.  I've been using this tray for years, and it just makes Small Room Living easier! (Small Room Living should totally be a thing....like Tiny House Living...don't you think?) I often eat in my room, especially in the evenings, so the tray is handy in carrying ...

Minimalist Approach to Preserving Memories from 2015

Image
Even though it seems like Christmas was last week , here we are at the end of January already. 2015 is already history, folks. As hard as that is to believe (because after all, it was just last month) we can never get the days of 2015 back. We can now remember them fondly as memories of the past. And boy, was there some good memories! Three family weddings, buying my first car, getting stranded in Canada...twice....in the same trip. Some memories I'd rather forget! {wink!} I am a bit of a sentimentalist at heart, but I also strive to be a minimalist and keep clutter at bay. So after having a fun-filled summer in 2014, I was left wondering...how can I hold on to those keepsakes and still keep a clutter-free, minimalist approach? In January of 2015, I purchased this box at TJ Maxx to act as my "Box of Memories." I love the Paris theme, and the faux book look of the box. It could easily be tucked into my bookshelf as another book, or displayed as art because it i...

Quick Tip Tuesday: Re-evaluate

Image
In every area of life, it is good to evaluate your current habits and systems every so often and see if there is a better way you could be accomplishing things. What once worked might not be the best situation for you any more! Things change and circumstances change...and sometimes the great ideas and plans that we had need to change to something better as well. This holds true in the organizing department. Really, this is one of the fun parts of organizing. When something isn't working so well, you get to organize all over again! I love the challenge of separating things and finding a place for everything. It is one of the reasons I have never worked or studied well in my room...I look up and see more things I could organize! :) But sometimes it needs to be done, so I challenge you: what is an area that needs to be re-evaluated? What about that area isn't working for you, and how could it be better? Take it apart, and try putting it back together a few different ways...
