Cooking and Saving Update February 12, 2016

Last week I decided to start sharing little updates for you with real, whole food grocery deals I find during the week, as well as simple, cost-effective recipes to use those ingredients. I'm back today with this week's update!

I don't know if these posts will be an every week thing forever, because I'm sure somewhere along the line I will run out of things to share with you. Or you will get tired of seeing pictures of my groceries. It is very possible. :) For now, I'm going to share these updates when I have deals to post in hopes that it is a help or encouragement to someone on a similar real food journey. It also motivates me to try and get the best possible deal and find yummy ways to use those items!

Here are some deals I got this week:

I found I didn't need a whole lot of groceries this week, and really focused on finishing up some leftovers before they went bad. (aka, I FINALLY finished the beans!) but I did pick up these items...

Cadia Organic Vegetable Broth: $1.99 I found a recipe I want to try! :)
Larabars: $.89 I stocked up since the sale price is ending :/
Clif Bars: $.99
Philadelphia cream cheese: 2/$3


And here are the recipes I tried:

I saved this Football Cheeseball recipe on FB weeks ago, and when I brought up the recipe I was pleased to find that is used all real food ingredients! (Ok, real pepperoni might be a stretch...) It was super easy to make and so yummy!! I greatly enjoyed the leftovers as a work snack. (I did leave out the pimentos because I couldn't find any)

 I'm determined to work on eating more veggies and finding recipes that center around veggies. Yes, cooking actual dishes takes a bit more time than just heating up leftovers, but I'm working at finding the time to make these healthy meals for myself. It won't happen every day, but some days I know I can fit it in my schedule.

One of my absolute favourite things to eat is this recipe for Brussels Sprouts and bacon over pasta. I know, those do NOT seem to go together, but it is delicious. And I am not one for weird food combinations, so just trust me when I say this is GOOD. I cooked up the Brussels and bacon and put it over couscous, since I had some on hand I had gotten on sale back a while ago. It was good! I also had some leftover roasted sweet potatoes from last week. All in all, a VERY inexpensive meal, and it left me with one serving of leftovers. (well, probably several servings of the couscous...because apparently couscous multiplies like beans do ;)


I also used the cheap organic tomato paste I got last week to make a batch of Tomato Macaroni soup - and easy crockpot recipe I will be sharing soon!

  1. I don't know where you are, but here apples, brussels sprouts, and kohlrabi are in season at the same time. I like to shred all 3 together into a very yummy salad (all raw).
    And, I have the same problem with beans, lol. Thanks for sharing your menu with us!

    1. I've decided brussels sprouts are good no matter how you fix them. ;) But I've never heard of kohlrabi...what is it like? Thanks for the suggestion!

  2. I stock up when I find Larabars under $1 too! I remember they were $2 a piece for a long time. If you're trying to eat healthier, you might find quinoa could replace pasta too. Higher in protein.

    1. Oh wow, I would have such a hard time paying $2 for a Larabar! I do plan on incorporating quinoa, thanks for the suggestion! I think it would be good with this brussels sprouts dish, too. :)

  3. Brussel sprouts and bacon over quinoa sounds wonderful to me. I just might grab a bag at Costco this weekend and make it up. My boys love most anything with bacon.

    And, even in a house with tons of people we struggle to not waste food.
